The Wonders Around Us

1 of 45 Moments of Wonder

You can now listen to 45 Moments of Wonder too!

Happy New Year! As we leave 2019 behind us, I am excited for the possibilities that lie ahead. What are you looking toward in 2020?

Have you ever taken the time to contemplate the wonder all around you? I admit, I rarely do. I am usually too busy contemplating how a certain political leader was able to be elected or why I keep waking up at ridiculous hours.

But today is New Year’s Day. What better time than today to decide to see what we have never seen before. What better time than today to resolve to do what we have never done before. I can think of no better “resolution” than to see the wonders all around us.

Even the fact that we celebrate a new year is pretty amazing. It is a wonder that the planet we are on (the one we don’t fly off of – hello gravity) manages to move around the sun and that we have found a way to measure that. It is a wonder to watch the seasons change, to watch kids grow. It is a wonder that within each one of us is the capacity to change the world for the better or for worse.

When I consider the idea of wonder, I can’t help visualizing small children in winter. There is wonder in their eyes and in their hearts when the snow first falls. They gaze upon twinkling lights with wonder and awe. The mystery of Christmas, the gifts under the tree and the gift of a child, fill their hearts with questions and curiosity, never judgement.

When we take the time to see and to appreciate the wonders around us, we are far more able to carry within us the wonder that is us. And when we can carry that wonder, that curiosity, within us, we can’t help moving away from judgement toward humility and compassion. We can see and appreciate the beauty that is within and all around us. We build a more positive state of being – body, mind and spirit.

I want to be a more compassionate, more positive, less judgmental person. So my goal for 2020 is exactly that. What a wonder that we can decide to be exactly who we want to be.

Do you see and appreciate the wonder that is within you? If not, try looking around and maybe you can see the wonder all around you. If the world we live in is a wonder, maybe you are too.
