A Hidden Wasp Nest

I was walking around the house the other day when I happened to glance up.

Tucked beneath the siding, just under the edge of the roofline, was a bald-faced hornet nest.

Not a tiny one.

A surprisingly large one.

I stopped and stared at it, wondering how long it had been there. I walk past that side of the house all the time. I walk up my driveway multiple times each day and should have seen it. I’ve mowed the lawn. Trimmed the bushes. Taken the dogs outside for a walk every single morning. Somehow, a colony had quietly built a home just a few feet above my head without me ever noticing.

My first instinct wasn’t even to figure out how to remove it.

It was to take a picture. I just stood there for a moment, impressed by the structure.

There’s something fascinating about seeing something that has been there all along. The discovery changes nothing about the object itself. The nest didn’t suddenly appear because I looked up. It had been patiently growing, one tiny piece at a time, while I carried on with my days below.

It made me wonder how much of life is like that.

Not just wasp nests.

Friendships that quietly deepen. Children who somehow seem taller overnight. Gardens that go from seedlings to abundance while we’re busy making dinner and paying bills. The first hints of autumn hidden in a tree that’s still mostly green.

Or the opposite. A worry that slowly grows in the corner of our minds because we keep telling ourselves we’ll deal with it later.

Most things don’t arrive all at once. They become. Quietly. Gradually. Almost invisibly.

Perhaps that’s why paying attention matters so much. Not because we need to notice everything.

We can’t.

But because every now and then, looking up changes the whole day.

The wasp nest will have to come down. My wife is allergic, so this isn’t something I’ll tackle myself. I’ll call someone who knows what they’re doing and let them safely take care of it.

But before it disappears, I’m strangely grateful that I saw it.

It reminded me that the world is always becoming, whether I’m paying attention or not.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is simply to look up.

What has been quietly growing around you that you’ve only just begun to notice?
