Everyone we meet is fighting a hard battle. Everyone. Even the ones we think have everything together. Even they are fighting a hard battle.
Even my children, who I think have a pretty good life, even they are fighting a hard battle. And my spouse, who seems to have joy and friends and all the things I often feel I don’t. Even she is fighting a hard battle.
So, dear friend, be kind. We don’t always know what other people’s battlefield looks like. For some, the battle is obvious, loud and it draws us in, bringing out our compassion and care. For others, the battle is silent and internal. But the battle is no less intense. So lets show some kindness and compassion.
Most of all, my friends, be kind to yourself. For you are fighting a hard battle too. I see you. I know that battle-weary look because I am also right there fighting with you. You may not know it. You may not see me there, but I am.
Yesterday was a tough day for me. I met with my psychiatrist for the first time. Don’t get me wrong, she was very nice and took the time to get to know me. But it is hard to have to talk about where I am and what I have been experiencing to a total stranger. I have had some difficulties with trusting doctors, particularly when it comes to talking about my mental health. This week, though, was also very encouraging as I learned I will be having surgery to remove Tina (my bone tumour) from my leg, next week. Battling the pain Tina has caused is enough to help me to remember that everyone has their own battles, their own pain, their own challenging times. It has also helped me to be kinder and gentler with myself. So important!
Today, as we look into the faces of those we love and live with, those we serve and work with, those we know and those we will meet for the first time, let’s try to see where a little kindness might soothe the battle-wounds and where compassion would make the battle-scars a little less painful. And when we look into the mirror, take a moment to acknowledge the battle you are fighting. Acknowledge the warrior looking back at you and let them know you see them too.
Be kind today, my friends.
